Building a Mom and Son Business
MilAndi Works is a mother (Andi) and son (Milan) team of woodworker, makers.
The idea of starting a business basically started when we ran out of metal and butcher block furniture projects. The origin of the name, "MilAndi" is derived from the melding of our names, Milan and Andi.
MilAndi Works
Three years ago we started a plan and developed a strategy about how we were going to make MilAndi Works a reality. We did not begin the process of building a company like other woodworkers. It began with several lists of "must haves" and "wants" including tools and types of wood we wanted to use in our products, as well as many ideas about we wanted to make. MilAndi Works as a company started as so many woodworkers do, by building our first cutting boards.
We often work together on many projects and our perspective about how we make things has grown through the inspirational ideas of others and a multitude of "brainstorming" sessions as we discuss how to bring our ideas to life. The process begins with an idea, we then design and create create a prototype that is then evaluated for quality and further developing how to perfect the process before we make the next product.
Our emphasis is to build high quality products is paramount and our ability to make a better product allows us to stand apart from others "out there." In order to accomplish this, we have become, in a way, our own worst enemies to achieve quality goals. This does not happen without the ruffling of feathers, as can often happen when a mother and son work together. We will always persevere! Superior quality does not come naturally, and through the process of critiquing each others work, a high degree of scrutiny and constructive criticism, we will always push each other to create the very best in quality products.
Our "day" jobs are very different from being woodworkers and through MilAndi Works, we have invested in ways that cultivate our personal creative styles. Milan is an accomplished engine mechanic and was very motivated to become an expert using our CNC machine. Andi is an Accounting professional and our company "bookkeeper," and becoming a proficient Thunder Laser operator. By dividing up these two specialized skillsets we each bring our particular discipline that allows us to team up on projects to create something different. As our expertise using these machines grow, so does our ability to design and build amazing products.
Our ultimate goal is to make cutting and charcuterie boards and so much more, that are meticulously crafted to offer you, our customers, a quality product that will become a part of your home for years to come.
